Resources
In response to needs identified by a survey of 143 remote and rural practitioners in Spring 2008, an audit of the skills education currently available in each geographic area from May to October 2008, and critical incident data from each of the health boards gathered in October 2008, the CS MEN is developing skills packs for requested skills, where there is not yet a national, evidence-based, Quality-Assured pack for use across Scotland.
We also have a role in working towards better value for money in skills education so are working to develop a mechanism for communication/information/resource sharing between people developing packs in the same skills in different locations.
In August 2009, Andrea Baker was appointed as Educational Resource Developer, to support the development of clinical skills resources to reduce the cost of duplicated resource development.
Skills resources developed or in development include:
- Chest Drains: insertion and care
- Intraosseous needles
- Suturing
- Clinical Decision Making
- Learning Safe Communication Skills
Process for resource development
We have developed a process for developing skills packs, based on that of the multiprofessional project of NHS Fife, NHS Tayside and the University of Dundee. We hope this will be adopted widely by resource developers across all NHS Boards, Universities and other education providers.
QA of resources
All resources endorsed or developed by the CS MEN are evidence-based and developed with representation from the relevant professional groups and from different geographic locations, to be as transferable as possible.
We have developed a simple self-assessment questionnaire to be used by the facilitators of skills sessions to check that the education meets nine criteria for best practice in skills delivery. This is available to download or from the CS MEN office. Please return completed forms to Andrea Baker at a.baker@dundee.ac.uk
All resources will be mapped to KSF dimensions and the SCQF as part of the QA process.
Audit of available skills education
Between May and October 2008, we undertook an audit of current skills education available in each geographic area. We recognise that although responses have been received from all education providers, not all responses were comprehensive. The database is being updated as new information is received.
If you are involved in skills education and wish to know what packs/courses already exist in your field/geographic area, please contact Felicity Garvie, Project Administrator on 01382 740220, or by email at f.m.garvie@dundee.ac.uk, who will be happy to supply information on existing provision.
